Dear Friends,
From this winter solstice as we begin to mark the reemergence of light and lengthening of days, I wish you joy and good health for the coming year.
Here are a few highlights from this past fall.
For my Critic portfolio (Small Business and Tourism, Western Economic Diversification, and Asia-Pacific Gateway), this fall’s “rural economy tour” of BC’s west and east Kootenay region was a rich experience. Meetings in eight different communities with local government, business and tourism reps gave me insight into the state of these rural economies, and innovative partnerships that diversify and strengthen the community employment base.
Two enjoyable new activities in Ottawa are chairing an All-Party International Conservation Caucus to educate and promote effective environmental conservation initiatives in Canada and abroad; and organizing bi-weekly Liberal Economic Policy Caucus, bringing colleagues together with guest speakers for discussion on Canada’s economic challenges and solutions.
Recently I met the new Consul-General of China in Vancouver Ms. LUI Fei and new Director General representing Taiwan in Vancouver, Mr. Michael Chen. I am excited to be part of a Parliamentary delegation leaving for Taiwan two days after Christmas! Did you know Taiwan has a multi-party democracy and population of over 23 million people?
On the home front, I worked to seek changes to the government’s crime Bill C-10′s provisions to prevent its counter-productive impact on community safety and justice, especially for young people and aboriginals. Thank you to all who participated in the discussions through my tele-Town Hall, stakeholder meetings, MP policy breakfast and petition. The Bill will next be reviewed by the Senate so it’s not too late for your voice to be heard!
The environment remains high on my agenda. This federal government’s negligence on climate change means action will be up to citizens and communities – more than ever before! My November Environment Summit with MP Stéphane Dion at Kitsilano Community Centre will be followed by a worshop in the spring to identify actions on which we can work together.
I remain grateful for your involvement, and for the privilege of serving you in 2011.
From my family to yours, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and safe Holidays!
Joyce
