In the current round of budget cuts, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans is losing more than 1,000 jobs. Up to 763 of those are being cut from the Canadian Coast Guard. The Kitsilano Search and Rescue Station in Vancouver, which serves the busiest port in Canada, will also be closing. After consulting with local search and rescue groups who say closing this base may result in preventable loss of life, Joyce has spoken out in the House of Commons against this closure.
