Joyce Murray appeared on CBC Power & Politics on 25th September to discuss Immigration Minister Jason Kenney’s recent email to members of the LGBT community about gay refugees. [The full letter is available here - http://bit.ly/PjHwUu]. Many recipients of that email were concerned that the Minister had mined their private information from a 2011 online petition supporting a gay artist in Nicaragua, who was then facing deportation.
Murray outlined sensible procedures to ensure the private information of Canadians is not misused for explicitly political purposes. She also stood up for the LGBT community and questioned the Conservative government’s hypocritical record on LGBT issues.
The other members of the panel were Rick Dykstra MP, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Immigration Minister, and Charmaine Bourg, the NDP Critic for Digital Issues.
