I had the honour of joining my Liberal colleagues in a meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres this afternoon at Rideau Hall. It was a privilege to hear the President’s practical comments about the possibilities of peace in the Middle East, his deep commitment to humanity, and his wise advice that Canada should use its oil wealth not for current budgets but to “invest in your children’s excellence”.

Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on the Visit of Israeli President Shimon Peres to Canada
OTTAWA— Together with Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Dominic LeBlanc, Liberal Defence critic John McKay and Liberal Small Business and Tourism critic Joyce Murray, Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on his meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres:
“I extend a warm welcome to President Peres as he visits Canada and highlights the strong and healthy relationship with deep historical roots that our countries enjoy. The Liberal Party remains committed to a secure and democratic Israel, a stable and democratic Palestinian state and to the ultimate goal of peace in the region. We believe that direct negotiations are the only way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to build peace in the region.
President Peres and I have met several times since my first visit to Israel in 1979, and I have always found him to be a person of great experience, wisdom and candour. I look forward to continued frank and productive exchanges today and in the future.
On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary caucus, I thank President Peres for his time and wish him an enjoyable and productive stay in Canada.”

Déclaration du chef libéral Bob Rae au sujet de la visite au Canada du président israélien Shimon Peres
OTTAWA— De concert avec les porte-parole libéraux responsables des affaires étrangères, Dominic LeBlanc, de la défense, John McKay, et de la petite entreprise et du tourisme, Joyce Murray, le chef libéral Bob Rae a fait la déclaration suivante aujourd’hui au sujet de sa rencontre avec le président israélien Shimon Peres :
« Je souhaite chaleureusement la bienvenue au président Peres alors qu’il est en visite au Canada et qu’il met en valeur la saine relation profondément ancrée qui existe entre nos deux pays. Le Parti libéral demeure engagé envers un État israélien démocratique aux frontières sûres et reconnues, aux côtés d’un État palestinien tout aussi démocratique et stable, et avec comme but ultime la paix dans la région. Nous croyons que des négociations directes représentent la seule voie possible de résoudre le conflit israélo-palestinien et d’assurer la paix dans la région.
Le président Peres et moi nous sommes rencontrés à plusieurs reprises depuis mon premier passage en Israël en 1979 et j’ai toujours vu en lui un homme de grande expérience, avec beaucoup de sagesse et de franchise. J’espère que nous continuerons nos échanges francs et fructueux aujourd’hui comme dans l’avenir.
Au nom du Parti libéral du Canada et de notre caucus parlementaire, je veux remercier le président Peres pour le temps qu’il nous accorde et je lui souhaite un séjour des plus agréables et des plus productifs au Canada. »
