For Immediate Release
September 19, 2012
OTTAWA— Liberal Small Business and Tourism critic Joyce Murray made the following statement today on the closure of the Kitsilano Search and Rescue station:
“Yesterday the City of Vancouver released a report outlining the dangers of closing the Kitsilano Station and calling for the Prime Minister to meet with the Mayor on this issue. At that time, the Mayor stated clearly that the city has neither the resources nor the mandate to fill the gap left by the Conservatives’ perilous decision.
The government’s misguided closure of this important safety institution reinforces its policy of continued refusal to engage in fact-based decision making and meaningful consultation with stakeholders. Lives are at stake and still this government continues to disregard the facts.
It is time that the Conservatives start listening to the people that will be affected by this closure. We call on the Prime Minister to meet with the Mayor of Vancouver and reverse his decision to close the Kitsilano Search and Rescue Station.”
